Judaism - frequently asked questions

Questions people often ask…

How do you describe a Jewish person?
A Jew is any person whose mother was a Jew or any person who has changed their religion to Judaism.

What is the name of the skull cap worn by Jewish men and boys?
It is called a yarmulke in Yiddish, or kippah in Hebrew. In Jewish tradition, Jewish men are expected to cover their heads when they pray. It is a sign of respect, and reminds them God is above us.

What is the difference between the Jewish and Christian Bibles?
The Christian Bible is in two parts — the Old Testament and the New Testament. When Jewish people talk about their Bible, they usually mean what Christians call the Old Testament.

What happens on the Sabbath?
The Sabbath begins on Friday at sunset and ends on Saturday at dark. It is meant to be a day of rest and time to relax, so usually all work is forbidden.
Sometimes this means Jewish people are not allowed to use electrical equipment, drive cars, light fires or gas stoves. Cooking is done before the Sabbath and kept hot in ovens. Lights are also controlled by time switches. Jewish people spend the day having family meals, going to synagogue, visiting friends (on foot) or reading as TV and radio are not allowed.
