Buddhism - frequently asked questions

Questions people often ask…

What or where is Nirvana?
Nirvana is difficult to explain or even to think about and understand.  Nirvana is believed to be neverending in size and time. Buddhist teachings say that nirvana is a very happy experience.

What factors affect where we will be reborn?
Karma is one of the most important things for working this out. The way we thought and behaved in the past affects where we will be reborn and what sort of life we will live – which is called Karma.
This means that the way we think and behave in this life will affect the next life we have in the future.  Gentle, loving people are usually reborn in 1 of Buddhism’s heavenly places.  Most of their life there will feel good.  A Buddha will remind them that they still must meditate and take the 8-Fold Path.
People who are anxious or worried are usually reborn in a hell place.  Most of their life there feels bad, and they may feel frustrated by desires.
Many Buddhists think about how they live here and now, and try to be kind, wise and thoughtful.

What is meditation?
Meditation is an effort to change how the mind works. The Pali word for meditation is bhavana, which means to make something grow or to develop.

Is there a short way to explain what Buddhism means?
The name Buddhism comes from the word budhi, which means to wake up. The faith is now 2,500 years old and has about 300 million followers in the world. Until 1 hundred years ago mainly Asians followed Buddhism. Today, many people from Europe, Australia and America are following this faith.
