Tower Hamlets is one of the most diverse places in the country. This diversity is seen as an asset and a strength and local people value Tower Hamlets as a place where people from different communities and religions can live together in harmony. However, even in a place like Tower Hamlets, there will always be occasions when a small minority will behave in an unacceptable and damaging way. It is important for everyone in Tower Hamlets that the police are informed of any such behavior so that this can be tackled and addressed at an early stage.

What is a faith hate crime?

A “hate crime” is any criminal offence where the victim is targeted because of their race or ethnicity, religious beliefs, gender, gender identity, disability, age, sexual orientation or any other actual orperceived difference.“Hate incidents” are incidents that do not constitute a crime but cause alarm, or distress, directed at someone because of any actual or perceived aspect of their identity.

What can I report?

You can report any incident you believe was motivated by faith whether the incident consisted of:

  • verbal abuse
  • damage to property
  • physical attack
  • bullying
  • graffiti
Why report it?

Reporting incidents of faith hate crime provides valuable information to the police and other local service providers which will help them tackle those involved and take action to prevent new incidents happening in the future.

Trained staff will be on hand to enable victims to report crime without having to speak directly to a police officer or visit a police station.

Information taken down will then be passed to the police and/or relevant organisations such as Victim Support and the local authority housing department with the permission of the victim within 24 hours. Police will log details of the crime and investigate accordingly.

Victims can also report a crime anonymously. Officers will then log the information for intelligence purposes only to give a clearer picture of crime patterns.
