There have been many Jewish buildings in the history of Tower Hamlets, like synagogues (a place where Jews worship), schools, hospitals and soup kitchens. Most of the Jews came to Tower Hamlets from Russia around 1881. After that more Jews came as refugees from Nazi Germany. In the 1920s there were more than 150,000 Jews in Stepney. Today there are just less than 2,000 Jews in all of Tower Hamlets. Although there are less Jews in Tower Hamlets today it is still seen as the point of arrival for the British Jewish community. |
