Hinduism - frequently asked questions

Questions people often ask…

What is the Hindu view on creation?
Several ancient texts in both India’s classical languages – Sanskrit and Tamil – talk about creation. The Tamil text Thiruvaaachagam offers the following simple words on the matter: “This vast universe was formed from an extremely powerful yet small fire ball, which burst into 101 crore (1.01 billion) pieces. The smallest atom and the largest piece are all made of the same matter, which was created from that energy. Pieces float in this enormous universe just like the floating dust particles, visible in a beam of light. The hot sun, the cold moon, the living earth are all created from that matter.”

What do Hindus place such importance on having a personal Guru?
Gurus have the knowledge, experience and insight to inspire a true understanding of God in their followers. They are so important to Hindus because having a role model to follow is such an important part of human nature.

Do Hindus have an equivalent to Satan in Christianity?
No. In Hindu thinking, everything happens as a result of the power and will of God. Whatever happens is neither good nor bad. Only human beings make such judgements.

How would a typical Hindu define his or her aim in life?
Hindus aim to free their minds from any limitations by knowing God. Achieving this freedom releases them from negative thoughts and psychological obstacles. This, in turn, is the first step towards living in harmony and equilibrium.
