SupportThis section gives you access to a range of organisations in Tower Hamlets that provide support on faith-based matters and other issues. It also directs you towards support outside the borough. The list is by no means definitive. We would welcome your comments in it, including suggestions for additional contacts. Tower Hamlets Faith-based organisations Barnardo’s CANDL Project This organisation aims to improve the quality of life for children, young people and families in east and south London. CANDL stands for Church and Neighbourhood Development in London. Churches Together in Poplar Open to all Christian leaders and their communities in Poplar. Encourages joint action for activities wherever possible and brings churches together for celebrations. Junior Muslim Circle London Buddhist Centre Lies at the heart of East London’s thriving Buddhist community and its growing Buddhist village. The LBC hosts a full programme of events and classes and stocks a wide range of books on Buddhism. Muslim Association of Professionals Support its members in various ways, empowering them with the resources to enrich their working environment with Islamic concepts while educating colleagues and society at large about Islam. Interfaith organisationsCanary Wharf Prayer Room This venue was the first joint venture in the country between faith communities and the private sector. Available for religious meetings and services, the room holds 40 people and incorporates a counselling room and kitchenette. It is open to key holders by arrangement. East London Church Leaders Group Fosters ecumenical co-operation in Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Islington, Havering, Newham, Barking & Dagenham, Redbridge and Waltham Forest. Neighbours in Poplar Provides practical support and care for all vulnerable people living at home, regardless of age, faith, race, gender, culture or disability. TELCO (The East London Communities Organisation) Brings together people from diverse backgrounds across the East End to work together towards the common good. General support organisationsCommunity Organisations Forum (COF) Aims to build and support a strong independent voluntary and community sector to serve Tower Hamlet’s diverse communities. Its website includes an extensive directory of community and faith organisations in Tower Hamlets and beyond. COF is the lead organisation in Tower Hamlets for the UK-wide Community Empowerment Network (www.neighbourhood.gov.uk). East London Advice Service Provides advice information to support general help and case work on housing, welfare benefit, debt, education, employment and rights. East London Self Help Network Supports and promotes self-help groups run by and for people with disabilities and long-term health conditions across Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Newham. Can also provide development support to new and existing self-help groups. Involvement Consortium Supports the relief of sickness and the protection and preservation of health among the Black and ethnic minority community in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and supporting areas. St Katherine and Shadwell Trust A grant-making trust committed to improving the quality for life for people living in the St Katherine and Shadwell wards of Tower Hamlets. Toynbee Hall Works to bring change to the local community by providing a range of services aimed at the particular needs of children, parents, families and the elderly. National Inter Faith organisationsHome Office Faith Communities Unit Supports the Home Office in its efforts to bring about a society in which different belief systems – whether religious or otherwise – are understood, respected and valued. Strives to ensure that faith communities are given the opportunity to participate fully in society through voluntary activity and other faith-based projects Inner Cities Religious Council (ICRC) A forum for members of faith communities to work with the Government on issues of regeneration, neighbourhood renewal, social inclusion, and other relevant cross-departmental policies and processes. The Inter Faith Network for the UK Works to build good relations between the different religious communities in the UK at both national and local levels. It aims to make the UK a country characterised by mutual understanding and respect between religions where all can practise their faith with integrity. Three Faiths Forum Encourages understanding, friendship and goodwill between the communities of Christianity, Islam and Judaism. Faith-based organisationsNational Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá'ís of the United Kingdom This is the elected governing body of members of the Bahá'í faith in the UK. Established in 1923, it aims to promote the oneness of humankind at the centre of this diverse and rapidly-growing community. British Buddhist Association Among other activities, this non-sectarian organisation promotes the educational, religious and meditation-related aspects of Buddhism at evening and weekend sessions. Churches Together in Britain and Ireland (CTBI) Co-ordinates the work of Christian churches from all denominations across Britain and Ireland. Strives to achieve greater visible unity without losing the distinct qualities that make churches different. Hindu Forum of Britain An umbrella body with a broad-based membership of Hindu organisations from different regions and cultural backgrounds in Britain. Supports community cohesion and coexistence through consultation, empowerment, capacity building and project development. Jain Samaj of Europe Aims to win recognition nationally and internationally for establishing a network to share the beliefs and heritage of the Jain religion. The Board of Deputies of British Jews For over 240 years the Board of Deputies has protected, supported and defended the interests, religious rights and customs of Jews in the United Kingdom and promoted the development of the Jewish community in Britain. Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) Among other aims, the MCB promotes co-operation, consensus and unity on Muslim affairs in the UK, while working towards a more enlightened appreciation of Islam and Muslims within society. Pagan Federation Brings Pagans together to promote and educate the wider community about Paganism. Organises and publicises local and national events. World Zoroastrian Organisation Dedicated to informing people about Zarathushtra and Zoroastrianism while improving the quality of life for needy Zoroastrians around the world through charitable, political and social activities.
